Pilcrow + Le Cool present Spiel #2
Legends of The Phoenix / On the Turkish Uprising
Spiel is back for a second helping of brain food this Tuesday, with muckraking as the order of the day. We’ll be asking Paddy Prendeville and Paul Farrell of The Phoenix – 30 years old this year – how best to keep a close eye on public figures, remain relevant, thorny and deliver proper investigative journalism while keeping visits to the Four Courts to a minimum.
Interviewing them will be broadcaster Colm Ó Mongáin, and they’ll be joined on stage by ferociously independent publishers Rabble. Fresh from a Fund:It campaign success that’s covered their print bill for the next year, they celebrated by delivering an impressive series of dispatches from Istanbul.
Tuesday 18th April 7.30pm
South Studios, 27/28 New Row South, Dublin 8 (map)

The Lonely Beast ABC version 2.0 is available on the App Store right now! It’s a universal app, which means you can now take the Lonely Beast out for a walk on any of your iOS devices (and it’s fully optimised for iPhone 5 and retina iPads too). We hope you like it; as always, get in touch if you have anything you’d particularly like to see in future updates.

In case you hadn’t noticed, The Lonely Beast ABC just got a shiny Retina overhaul for the latest 1.3 iPad update. All of Chris’ illustrations look extra-crisp, colours are more vivid and – perhaps best of all – the jelly wobbliness has been increased by a massive 37%.
We always love to hear what you think of the latest version – hit the button to leave us a quick review on the App Store and you’ll win our undying gratitude.

The Bottom Half of the Internet/The Unreal Engine
Racism; typos; filth; spam; ignorance; rage – that’s all the bottom half of the internet is good for, right? Rob Manuel (co-founder B3ta) wants you to question the internet dictum, most beloved of high-profile newspaper columnists, that you should ignore all of the comments all of the time. The ‘war on comments’, he reckons, might just be an echo of a fourth estate that’s having trouble adjusting to the idea of an unwashed public disagreeing with their sacred opinions. Sous les pavés, la plage.
Bitcoin (currently trading at $236.52 $0.09 $120.1) is big enough to feature in The Economist & The Metro alike - but what of the other economies and currencies birthed by the internet? Ed Melvin (Publicis) explores digital money and how it leaks into the real world, whatever that is.
